Come to Costa Rica and share Hollie Heller’s studio! Use this experience of “art making decadence,” in this this exotic location to rejuvenate and inspire, a place of restoration to generate fresh ideas and offer new approaches to thinking intuitively and making art within a small group of artists. Come with a project in mind or as a blank canvas. Develop your vision and receive input from others that may inspire new directions. Soak in the environment and make art! Group discussions sharing our art making processes and inspirations will promote dynamic creative dialogues that will be integrated into each day.
Hollie’s vast experience with surface design and experimental layering will bring a unique new vocabulary to your artwork. We will begin with producing a variety of patterned and layered papers. Collage, fabric dying techniques, and photo transfer will allow for a full exploration of ideas and materials. Expect to learn basic design concepts (Unity/Variety/Harmony, Rhythm, Pattern and Focal Point) and useful technique for producing high quality finished products.
June will expand on the processes that Hollie has introduced. We will work on multiple panels with each of us sharing a unique contribution. We will continue the idea of making papers for collage, this time using wax paint as a way to stain and draw on the papers.

Join mixed media artist (and Tamarindo resident) Hollie Heller and visiting artist June Shatken at Hollie’s beautiful ocean front studio. This workshop will be an exploration of the warmth and colors of Costa Rica and the mysteries which lie in the unique northern Guanacaste region. Expect to start with mixed media work, using collage and acrylic mediums. There will be guided exercises as well as afternoons working at your own pace. Towards the end of the week, we will introduce the unique properties of encaustic paint as a way to add rich color and depth. Plan for daily walks on the beach, amazing sunsets and food. This is an intimate retreat, so please sign up as soon as you can, since space is limited. There is a wide range of lodging options in the area and we’ve created several packages with hosts in the area. RETREAT PRICE: $980 AFTER DEADLINE.

Airfare: Flights to Costa Rica are reasonable but a bit higher priced during the winter months. You fly into Liberia and we will arrange a shuttle pick up.
Airport Shuttle: We will help arrange a shuttle from Liberia to Tamarindo.

Yoga: Calle Luna has a yoga pavilion. We may have the opportunity to organize group practice there or at Hollie’s. There are excellent yoga teachers in Tamarindo.
